Hurricane is here now and each year it seems to get a little bit worse. This article will give you important step by step instructions for preparing for hurricane season. This article is for those who ride out the hurricanes and those who evacuate.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Evacuation route.
  • Canned foods.
  • Flash lights.
  • Batteries of all sizes.
  • AM/FM radio-Battery powered.
  • Bottled water or one gallon jugs filled with clean water.
  • Ply wood for boarding up your windows.
  1. Step 1

    +DECIDING ON A SAFE SPOT+

First pick a safe spot in your home and have hurricane drills with your family before hurricane season. Make sure the safe spot is away from windows. Usually in a hall or the bathroom is a good safe spot. If you have a hurricane bunker, make sure that it is fully functionable.

  2. Step 2

    +POWER SOURCE+

If you have ever rode out a hurricane then you know that the first thing to go is the power. So step one is to buy a gas powered generator and extension cords along with a 55 gallon drum of gasoline that has a safe seal in a safe area.

  3. Step 3

    +FOOD PREPARATION+

Always, always make sure to stock up on enough of non perishable items such as canned foods. Beans, corn, canned meat such as potted meat and vienna sausage and corn beef hash and canned beef stew. Any can food will do. There are even canned fruits such as canned pears and canned peaches that you can stock up for hurricane season.

  4. Step 4

    +HYDRATION PREPARATION+

Stock up on as many cases of bottled water as you can. Also stock up on gallons of water. When the power goes out and the generator is busy running other things it will be very hot so you will need water not only for hydration but for cooking, cleaning and commode flushing.

  5. Step 5

    +EVERYTHING ELSE+

Make very very sure to stock up on plenty of batteries and flashlights. Also buy a am/f/m radio to keep up with weather reports. By all different sizes of batteries so that you can make sure that you have the right size battery at the same time. Stock up any utensils and cookware that you will need to eat from.

  6. Step 6

    +FIRST AID KIT+

Buy at least two small fully organized first aid kits for hurricane season. Also stock up on blankets and sheets as well as pillows and sleeping bags.

  7. Step 7

    +WINDOW PREPARATION+

Stock up on enough plywood to cover up all of your exterior windows and doorways. This will save you in damages by saving your windows and doors. I know first hand through hurricane katrina. Also stock up on a skill saw and a drill as well as nails and screws.

  8. Step 8

    +EVACUATING TO THE ATTIC+

Be sure to have a clear and easy way to the attic in case of severe flooding. The attic can save your life in case of flooding that causes the water to rise during the hurricane.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store some non perishable items in the attic in case you have to evacuate there.
  • If your city and state issues a mandatory evacuation, leave immediately.
