Step 1
Whether you are making, refinishing a piece of furniture or working on another wood working project, there is going to be nail holes or other holes that need to be filled in so those hole surfaces are even with the surfaces around them. The stores do sell wood putty that is the same color as some stains, but they might not have the color putty stain mixture you need.Below I will mention a way to make your own mixture and fill in those holes with the wood putty and color stain you are going to use.

Step 2
The tools you would need for this part of your project is regular natural color wood putty, the color stain you want or need,a putty knife, medium and fine grit sand paper,a piece of cardboard to mix the stain and putty on,a mixing stick and gloves. When your project is at this point in filling in the holes. You would first need to mix the stain and putty together.Get your piece of cardboard, stain and putty.Put a small glob of putty on the cardboard and add a tiny bit of stain and mix with the stick,if the putty is not the same color as the stain you would need to add a little more stain until the stain and putty-stain colors match. The consistency of the putty mixture should be the same as the natural colored putty that you are using to mix with the stain.

Step 3
When you have the right color putty mixture, get your putty knife and put some of your putty mix on your putty knife and fill in the nail holes, other holes and a little over the holes too, because when the putty is fully dry,you would need to sand the excess putty off until even with the surface around the holes and not sand any more wood off.Check the putty after a few hours to see if it is fully dry,if not wait, allow another few more hours or until the next day. After the putty is fully dry,you sand the putty off with the medium grit sandpaper until close to the surfance, then with the fine sandpaper to finish sand to the surface. Then you will have a nice smooth surface(s) on the piece of furniture. When all sanded, wash the whole piece of furniture off with a wet rag to get all the dust off,let the piece dry and then you can apply the stain.
