How to Make a Home Safe From Burglars thumbnail
Protect your home by never allowing it to look unoccupied.

Common sense prevails when you're trying to keep your home safe from burglars. You should always lock your doors, for example. The obvious steps bear repeating, however. A savvy intruder may be prowling your neighborhood for a homeowner who has become lax with home security. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the lights. Burglars are less apt to break into a house if the yard and home are well lit. Turn on porch lights and install outdoor lighting around the yard and walkways. Keep an interior light on a timer so your house is never completely dark at night.

Always lock the doors and windows. An unlocked door or window is an open invitation to burglars. Be vigilant in the summer, when kids frequently come in and out of doors; even if you're going away for only a few minutes, lock your doors.

Don't leave evidence that you're away. If you're going out of town, ask a neighbor to watch your house. Ask him to grab your newspaper every day, take out your garbage cans on garbage day, and walk through the house every few days to check on things. Leave a light on inside the house to give the appearance that it is occupied. Close the blinds so intruders cannot peek in windows.

If you live in a high-risk area, install bars over your windows, extra locks on your doors and a security camera. Fix broken windows or gates that could allow entrance to your yard and home. Trim overgrown bushes that could provide hiding places for intruders.

For extra security and peace of mind, install an alarm system. Systems that are connected to a monitoring service will alert you if security is breeched.
