Things You'll Need:
- Quiet place to have the phone interview
- Telephone
- You resume
- Info on the company
- Contact info on the interviewer
- Your STAR scenarios spread out on the table in front of you
-
Step 1
Practice your STAR technique - Situation, Task, Action, Result
Put together at least 3 or 4 of these scenarios and use the above format. It is commonly used at large organizations like American Express.
4 paragraphs.
The situation was this. I had a client on the phone who missed his flight.yada yada
My task (or job) was to make sure he got on his way on the next flight with as little inconvenience as possible
My action was to call the sales rep for yaya airways and get them to overbook the flight.
The result was that the client only had to wait another 20 minutes before boarding a flight for his destination.
Did you notice the use of the STAR wording? This keeps you on track. Many people start to ramble on and get off subject. This keeps you on track. Having 3-4 scenarios let's you change them around to fit the question being asked. Keep them spread out in front of you so they do not hear you rustling papers. -
Step 2
Pick a quiet place for your interview. Send the kids out if you can. No interruptions at all. You need quiet to concentrate.
-
Step 3
Use a land line phone if you have one. Then turn off your cell phone. Turn off call waiting too. YOu want a clear phone line and no interruptions.
