How to Detox with Psyllium Husk

Just about everyone has Plantago ovata or another of the cousin plantain weeds growing in their yard. These plants are often overlooked as just weeds, but they are all edible. Psyllium husk comes from Plantago ovata. It is high in fiber, and a natural laxative. Often, it is used during a detox to facilitate bowel movements. If you're not keen on foraging and drying your own psyllium husks you can find them at most health food stores. Use of psyllium can help resolve problems with diarrhea and anal fissures, and may help to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a blender to grind your psyllium husks to a fine powder. This will make the product easier to use and more effective.

    • 2

When you awake in the morning, mix 1 teaspoon of psyllium husk with an 8 ounce glass of water. Stir the mixture well, and then drink. You must always take psyllium in a glass of water. Otherwise, its expansion could interfere with your ability to swallow it. Water also helps to move the fiber through your body. Follow this with some light exercise.

    • 3

Take one dose of probiotics 20 minutes before breakfast. Probiotics are living organisms that are found in yogurt, but can also be bought as a supplement. Read the instructions on your supplements for proper dosage. Probiotics aide digestion and overall health of the intestines.

    • 4

Eat a light and healthy breakfast. Fruit or fresh protein shakes are a good thing to eat in the morning when using psyllium. It's best to eat three meals a day when using psyllium. It's not meant to be taken without food.

    • 5

Drink an 8 ounce glass of water every couple of hours. Psyllium expands quickly. This will help your body to move the psyllium through your digestive system. You should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day.

    • 6

Eat a light and healthy lunch of brown rice, vegetables, or broth.

    • 7

Take another dose of your probiotics 20 minutes before dinner. You can eat a slightly heavier meal than you did for breakfast and lunch. However, keep to whole foods like fish, vegetables, rice, or beans.

    • 8

Mix 1 teaspoon of psyllium with an 8 ounce glass of water before bedtime. Drink this mixture. You can repeat this routine for up to 7 days.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you experience up to 3 days of constipation you should consult a doctor. Discontinue use of psyllium husk if you have difficulty breathing, or get skin rashes or hives. These are signs of allergy. If you've had bowel surgery or bowel abnormalities you shouldn't use psyllium husk unless your physician instructs you to do so. Avoid use of psyllium if you have throat problems or difficulties with swallowing. People with Parkinsons may have trouble with swallowing psyllium. Psyllium can reduce blood sugar levels. Diabetics using psyllium husk should monitor their blood sugar levels. Seek medical attention if you experience chest pains, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing after using psyllium husk.
