Step 1
Get more fiber in your diet. Fiber is a miraculous colon cleanser, but most Americans don't get nearly enough of it in their diets. Too much meat, too much white flour and other starches, and over-cooked and over-processed foods in general choke up the colon and build up more toxins in your system. Eat as many fruits and vegetables, preferably raw, as possible--people who have tried a diet of all or mostly raw vegetarian foods swear by it. But you don't have to be that extreme in order to reap a great deal of benefit from a high-fiber diet.

Step 2
Drink more water. There is disagreement among authorities as to exactly how much water a person should drink in a day. The best rule of thumb is that if you get thirsty, you haven't been drinking enough. Take sips of water frequently throughout the day. And don't expect to get the same benefit from sodas, coffee or alcoholic beverages.

Step 3
Try fasting. There are many types of fast, the most austere of which involves abstaining from all nourishment for extended periods of time. This is unnecessary and even dangerous. Most people who fast regularly do so for one to three days, and do not necessarily eliminate food altogether. Some consume only juices and other liquids during that time. Any reduction in your customary type, amount and frequency of diet will give your colon a chance to do some catching up.
-
Step 4
Try detoxification products. Natural laxatives such as senna and castor oil will help to some degree to purge your system, but there are other products made specifically for colon cleansing. Most contain psyllium seed husks, which work by introducing a concentration of fiber into your system. Another product you may want to consider is a solution of bentonite (a type of clay), which purportedly binds to toxins and impurities in your colon and removes them.

Step 5
Try an enema or even a colonic irrigation (usually just called a colonic), which supposedly cleans the colon much more extensively than does a mere enema. Many doctors, however, dispute this claim and insist that a colonic is nothing more than a high-priced enema.
