How to Use a Rivet Tool

Rivets are an effective fastening tool, but because they are slightly more difficult to use than screws and nails, they are far less prevalent in domestic projects. Rivets are used in a variety of situations, holding together anything from street signs to parts of an aircraft. Various rivet heads are available to suit their intended use; an expert at any hardware store can recommend the best choice for each project.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark where the rivet will go through the two objects to be attached and drill a hole with the same diameter as the rivet.

    • 2

Line up the two holes that were just drilled and push the rounded end of the rivet through until the base of the stem is flush with the top surface.

    • 3

Push the rivet gun onto the top of the stem and squeeze the handle until the rivet flares and the stem pops off. The rivet is now permanently in place.
