When your camping, there is nothing better than stepping out into the brisk morning air to the smell of someone cooking bacon & eggs. In fact, part of the thrill of camping has a lot to do with the food! So here are some menu ideas for your next camping trip.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A camping stove.
  • Propane
  • A cooler w/ice.
  • Your choices of food sealed well.
  • Plates, utensils, cups.
  1. Step 1

For planning the first meal of the day you want to think about foods that will not leave you hungry an hour after you eat them. Also, consider what foods will provide energy for the day's upcoming activities. Like I said, bacon and eggs are a good breakfast choice for camping. Sausage is great too. You want to have something that will provide you with plenty of protein especially if you will be doing any hiking, riding bikes, or other activities requiring exertion. Another breakfast idea is to make up a batch of muffins before you go and put them in a big zip-lock bag for eating them on your trip. If you are coffee drinker, bring instant coffee. You might want to bring a flavored kind like, International Coffee's Instant Coffee so that you can skip having to take along sugar and creamer if you use them.

  2. Step 2

For lunch, hot dogs cooked at the campfire are always good. Bags of chips can be passed around and you really don't have to clean up and dishes after this meal, unless you want to add a can of pork and beans to it. Peanut butter and Jelly or pretty much any other sandwich can be made before hand or at the campsite. I like to get a big sub-sandwich that can be cut into individual sandwiches for lunch.

  3. Step 3

Snacks are a good thing to have while camping. Dried fruit is a nice healthy choice. Fresh fruit tends to get bruised and can be messy depending on the type. If you want fresh fruit, pick those that can travel well. Candy bars or energy bars are good to have too as long as you keep them somewhere where they will not melt.

  4. Step 4

For supper, fry up any fish that you might have caught. If that is not going to happen, you might want to have some fish already seasoned and prepared for cooking in your cooler. Slices of ham or turkey ham make a good main dish while camping too. Prepared anti-pasta salads or macaroni and cheese make nice side dishes. They can be found at your grocery store' s deli along with many other things that are good for taking on a camping trip. You may also consider driving into the closest town and seeing what your dining options there are.

  5. Step 5

Time to roast some marshmallows! And of course, you can make smores for dessert. But lots of people forget about the popcorn that you can put directly over a campfire. It is a lot of fun for kids to pop and adults too for that matter!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you keep the foods that need to be kept cold on ice. You don't want to get salmonella or anything.
  • Get rid of all of your trash in covered trash areas to prevent bears from coming to your camp!

on 7/17/2009 Camp cooking is great fun. Bring frozen steaks, baking potatoes roast up great in the coals. If you bring a cast iron frying pan, you can cook up just about anything. Of course, like you said, marshmallows finish dinner off.
