How to Care for a Bruised Tailbone
The tailbone, medically known as the coccyx, is literally located at the tail end of the spine. It is a segmented bone held in place by joints and ligaments. The tailbone can easily be injured during a fall or from impact while playing sports. Doctors usually x-ray the area to see if the tailbone is fractured or just bruised. A bruised tailbone (coccydynia) will take time to heal, usually several weeks.

Sit, sleep and stand comfortably. Sitting on a donut cushion, a cushion with a hole in the center to alleviate pressure on the coccyx, is very helpful. These cushions are found in medical supply stores. Even a child's swimming inner tube will work. Sleeping on your side may be better at night for your pain. Change positions frequently while sitting, standing or kneeling.
