Though the Xbox 360 only supports Microsoft's proprietary .wmv format for video files, most video can be easily converted to be playable on the console.

      Download the VLC media player to convert any video files not already in .wmv to that format to render them playable on the Xbox 360. All of the most common video types are supported.

      Transfer the converted video files to a USB flash drive. They can also be burned to a CD or DVD and still be handled by the Xbox 360.

      Plug the flash drive into either one of the USB ports on the face of the Xbox 360.

      Turn on the Xbox 360 and access the "Media" tab on the main system menu. The flash drive will be recognized under the "Video" tab as a portable device.

      Select any video you wish to watch. It will begin playing on whatever display the Xbox 360 is connected to. You can use the controller to pause, rewind or fast-forward the video.

Tips & Warnings

  • Xbox 360 owners with a Netflix account can stream any "Watch Instantly" movies directly onto their television sets with their Xbox 360.
