1
Shampoo and condition your hair; this will keep your hair looking healthy. If you have coarse hair and are of African American descent, you will need to apply oil sheens to your hair to keep it looking healthy. Blow dry your hair or allow it to air dry on its own. This step may be done before going to bed, and the remaining steps left until the morning; however if you plan on going for a gelled ponytail you may want to leave the washing for in the morning and skip the drying step.

Decide on the casual hairstyle you want to do today. The following steps can be used separately or in any combination to help you achieve different hairstyles. Each style is simple and should take approximately five minutes to complete.

3
Straighten your hair to remove any frizziness; you may want to apply a leave in conditioner or a frizz serum, especially on humid days as a lot of people's hair tends to frizz up when exposed to moist air.

4
Use a comb or hairbrush to pull your hair back; you can pull it straight to the middle of your head, slightly to one side or the other, up high, or low against the nape of your neck. Secure with a ponytail or hair clip. If putting your hair in a clip, it is often easier to clip if you twist your hair into a tight twist before clipping on the hair clip.

5
Curl your bangs inward to frame your face with your heated curling iron. You may also want to use your curling iron to create ringlet curls in your ponytail, instead of having straightened hair in your ponytail. This step is completely optional.

6
Remember, instead of drying and straightening, you can leave your hair wet and scrunch it with hair gel or mousse. Allow your hair to slightly dry, then use a hair pick and your fingers to guide your hair back into position and secure with a hair elastic.

Tips & Warnings
Use regular bobby pins to secure and loose piece that don't look good hanging down, but won't fit into the pony tail. You can hide your hair elastic by choosing ones that match your hair color, or by wrapping a strand of your own hair around the elastic and securing with a bobby pin.
