How to Make a Lucha Libre Mask

Lucha Libre, which means "free wrestling" in Spanish, is a popular Mexican sport. These wrestlers, in addition to elaborate costumes, wear tight masks over their heads. These masks are made of a stretchy material (usually in a dark color) so that it is easily slipped over the head and conceals the facial features of the wrestler (including the nose and ears). Brighter colored fabrics are used to decorate the mask, especially around the eyes and mouth.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Making the Mask

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your head, add 2 inches, and divide that number in half. For instance, if your head has a circumference of 20 inches, the number you get will be 11.

    • 2

Cut out 2 pieces of fabric that are each 18 inches long and as wide as the number you got from step 1. These fabric pieces should be flat on the bottom and the sides and rounded on the top.

    • 3

Sew the 2 pieces together (allowing for an inseam of 1/4 an inch), leaving the flat bottom open. Hem the bottom of the mask.

    • 4

Cut 3 holes out of the front of the mask: one for your mouth, and one for each eye. Hem each hole so that it doesn't fray.

    • 5

Use the puff paint to decorate the mask any way you'd like. Traditional lucha libre masks usually are heavily decorated around the eyes and mouth, leaving the rest of the mask plain.
