How to Make a Hanging Votive Candle Holder
Votive candles add ambiance to both indoor and outdoor events. Placing candles on tables or sideboards can be dangerous, though, because they may get knocked over. Hanging votive candle holders are an attractive option that keep the flames away from your guests. You can easily make them from empty vegetable cans and a nail. They can safely sway in a breeze or be hung inside the home without danger of wax spills or burns.

1
Peel off as much label as you can. Soak the can in warm water for 30 minutes or run through your dishwasher to soften the rest of the label so that you can remove it.
-
2
Fill the tin can with water and place in freezer. Remove once the water is completely frozen.
-
-
3
Use the hammer and nail to make small holes all over the can. The ice will keep the can from collapsing as you hammer and the holes will allow the candle light to shine through.
-
4
Hammer two holes 1/4 inch from the can's rim on opposite sides for your wire to go through. Allow the ice to melt and dry the can.
-
5
Cut a 12-inch length of wire. Stick one end into a hole in the rim and pull out 3 inches of wire. Wrap it around the main part of the wire to secure it to the can. Repeat with other end of the wire in the opposite hole.

6
Place a votive candle into the bottom of the can. Hang votive holder inside or out for an attractive addition to your lighting.

Tips & Warnings
Paint the cans with an enamel spray paint after hammering in the holes. Mark a design for your holes with a permanent marker before hammering.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Candles suspended indoors should be 12 inches below the ceiling to avoid scorching the plaster.
