How to Install a Sissy Bar
A "sissy bar" is a rear backrest that is added to motorcycles to allow passengers a measure of safety. The bars link to either the shock absorber top mounts or to a secondary tube that is connected to the rear fender. The average backyard motorcycle mechanic can install a sissy bar in about 15 minutes.

Obtain the correct sissy bar for your motorcycle. Some models are common and available everywhere, but some motorcycles require custom-fabricated equipment. The bar can have a luggage rack, rear cushioned seat-back and even large trunks with additional taillights. Many options are available.

Prepare the motorcycle for the rear bar assembly. Most types of bars will link to the shock bolts, and the nuts can be loosened without removing the shock absorber. Other types can mount to the rear fender, and the fender will either have pre-drilled holes or require modification to mount the bar. Once obstructions have been cleared, the bar can me moved into position from the rear of the bike and rested on the mount points.

Install the sissy bar. Tighten the shock absorber bolts, or fasten the rear fender mount with its provided bolts. Some rare bar assemblies will have both mounts, and they will require an exact fit to mount properly.

Tips & Warnings
Most motorcycles will have additional wiring for adding taillights; check under the seat.
Do not put full weight on the sissy bar wile the motorcycle is in motion.
