How to Replace an Outside Faucet

Outside faucets, sometimes referred to as "hose bibs," feature a threaded tip designed to connect utility or appliance hoses to a water source. Over time, hose bibs are particularly susceptible to leaks, either from the top of the faucet when in use or from the faucet's spout when the faucet is turned off. Hose bibs contain two rubber washers. One washer is located on top of the faucet, while the other is located at the faucet's tip. Leaks occur when either of these two washers wear out. Thankfully, replacing an outside faucet is actually easier than repairing an existing faucet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the main water supply off at the shut-off valve located adjacent to the water meter.

    • 2

Attach an adjustable wrench to the packing nut, then twist the faucet in a counterclockwise direction with the wrench to remove the faucet from the water supply pipe. The packing nut is located at the base of the faucet where the faucet meets the wall. Packing nuts typically feature six sides designed to allow a wrench to fit securely onto the faucet.

    • 3

Wrap the threaded end of the exposed water supply pipe with Teflon tape two or three times. The Teflon tape will prevent water from leaking from the water supply pipe through the faucet's threads.

    • 4

Position the replacement faucet onto the threaded tip of the water supply pipe, then twist the valve in a clockwise direction until the valve secures itself to the supply line.

    • 5

Attach the adjustable wrench to the packing nut, then twist the faucet in a clockwise direction with the wrench until the valve rests against the wall.

    • 6

Apply a bead of clear silicone, commonly available at most hardware stores, around the packing nut where the nut meets the wall. Although not absolutely required, the silicone will prevent insects from entering the interior of the wall.

    • 7

Turn the water supply on to complete the replacement.
