French is a beautiful Romance language, and learning it for free is easy, thanks to the Internet. Several websites offer sound clips and phrases to establish the basics of the French language. You can learn grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation online without paying a penny.

1. Check out instructional French language websites. See the Resources below for a list of websites that teach the basics of French grammar as well as providing audio clips to teach you how to pronounce phrases.

2. Look into online phrasebooks. See the Resources below for a few suggestions. These phrasebooks can teach you basic vocabulary, allowing you to increase the number of things you're able to say and the degree to which you can communicate.

3. Don't discount Babelfish. This online translation site can help you learn by translating specific phrases and teaching you how to string together sentences.

4. In order to practice conversing in French, post on Craigslist or other community websites, such as the forum of a French Alliance in your town, to find a French speaking partner.
