Floppy disks were an extremely useful source of removable storage for computers for years. Not only could they be taken from computer to computer, but they were lightweight, small enough to fit in a pocket, and best of all they were inexpensive. However, like any other hard drive or removable disk, it is possible for a file to become corrupt on the floppy disk, making it unable to open. There is a way though to open the corrupt file and use the information.

Things You'll Need:

  • Unlocker software (freeware)
  1. Step 1

Download the free software called Unlocker by following the link provided in the Resources section at the bottom of this page and click "Download Unlocker 1.8.7," then click "Save File" when asked if you would like to save the file.

  2. Step 2

Double-click the newly downloaded file. It will appear in either a "Downloads" pop-up window or as an icon on the desktop. Click "OK" and then "Run" when asked if you would like to run the program.

  3. Step 3

Click "Next" when the installation wizard launches, then follow the remaining prompts to complete the installation.

  4. Step 4

Insert the floppy disk into the computer. Open the disk and right-click the corrupt file. Select "Unlocker" from the pull-down menu.

  5. Step 5

Click "Unlock all" when the new window appears, then click "Quit." The file will now be able to open and the files will be able to function.
