How to Use a Colon Tube on a Child
Colon tubes are flexible tubes used to carry liquids from an enema bag to the colon. Enemas are often used to treat constipation. If a child has stomach or intestinal problems, a doctor may recommend medicine via enema as opposed to oral medication. Using a colon tube can be difficult and can cause injury if done improperly. Inserting a colon tube in a child can be especially difficult as she is less likely to hold still. An enema can become a traumatic experience for a child if it is done the wrong way.

Calm the child by explaining that inserting the colon tube is necessary for her health. Let her know it will be painless and will not take long.

Attach the colon tube to the enema bag. Some colon tubes come pre-attached to the bag.

Lubricate the end of the tube with Vitamin E cream or olive oil.

Tell the child to lie down on his left side. Have him take a deep breath and relax. Insert the tip of the tube into the colon. A half-inch is enough to start out with.

Start the flow of water. This will create a channel that will make tube insertion easier.

Continue pushing the tube in slowly until it stops. The tube may go in only two or three inches on a child. Do not force the tube to go in farther.

Reward the child after the process is finished. This will help him associate it with something positive.
The smaller the tube is, the more likely it is to cause injury. Be extra cautious when using thin tubes.
