How to Clean & Care for Teak Furniture

Teak wood is often used to make outdoor furniture since it is quite durable and can withstand the weather elements for generations. Some owners prefer their teak to turn gray, while others prefer to keep it looking new---golden brown with a smooth finish. Others might stain their teak and in which case, only periodical cleanings are needed. Whatever way you prefer, it is important to read the manufacturer's directions, especially if your teak furniture is still under warranty.

• Teak oil
• Rag
• Hose
• Mild soap
• Sponge
• Copper or brass wool

Instructions

1. Cover your teak furniture during the winter months. You can also move it to a covered area where it won't be exposed to weather elements. Try not to leave your teak furniture in puddles or in the wet ground. While teak can withstand the elements for years, this practice will help prolong its life.

2. Wipe off the teak's excreted oils to aid in the graying process, if desired. Once you notice the oils, wipe it with a clean towel.

3. Sand your unstained teak furniture when it starts to gray. Then apply teak oil, following the manufacturer's directions. This process will help maintain the teak's brown color and smooth finish, if desired. Reapply the teak oil every three months.

4. Use a hose to clean off your teak furniture. Do not use a pressure washer. For tougher dirt, mix a little mild soap with warm water and use a sponge or rag to clean the furniture. Rinse well.

5. Use copper or brass wool (not steel wool) to gently remove bird droppings and other hard to remove stains.
