Forgo the store bought silk roses; make a ribbon rose, or a dozen. These simple ribbon roses require minimal supplies so save money making these ribbon roses.

The flowers can be used to create floral arrangements, boutonnieres, corsages, long-stemmed roses, decorations on hats, and more.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wire-edged ribbon, two colors and sizes
  • Needle
  • Thread

Gather your supplies. All that is needed to make a ribbon rose is ribbon with wire edges, needle, and thread. For this demonstration, I used two sizes and colors of ribbon.

  2. Step 2
    Roll the ribbon.

    Roll the ribbon.

Begin with the small ribbon. Begin rolling the ribbon to form the center of the rose. The wire edge on the ribbon keeps the shape.

  3. Step 3
    Pull the ribbon down.

    Pull the ribbon down.

Keep wrapping the ribbon, gradually pulling the ribbon down so the ribbon is beneath the center roll.

  4. Step 4
    Begin stitching the bottom closed.

    Begin stitching the bottom closed.

Pinch the bottom of the wrapped ribbon so it is flat. Begin stitching the bottom flat portion closed to hold it together. Snip the ribbon off. You have a pink rose bud.

  5. Step 5
Begin wrapping the cream ribbon around the pink bud.

Begin wrapping the cream ribbon around the pink bud.

Take the second color of ribbon and fold over the top portion to hide the edge. Pinch the second ribbon together at the bottom with the first rose bud in pink. Keep wrapping the cream-colored ribbon until it looks like a rose. Play with this until it looks right.

  6. Step 6
    Stitch the edge closed.

    Stitch the edge closed.

Cut the ribbon and begin positioning the ribbon where you want it. Stitch the edge and bottom of the ribbon together. Form the bottom with your fingers to the shape you want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use different colors of ribbon to make an assortment of ribbon roses.
  • Add stems and leaves as desired.

on 7/18/2009 Cool, Peggy! I have some magenta ribbon that would make some georgeous roses. I can use my trusty hot glue gun to attach them to some wire stems. Great article, idea for a pretty craft.

on 7/14/2009 Love the pictures! I can't even wrap a present so I think I'm a firm 'out' for ribbon roses but love the idea.
