Tomato plants are sun lovers. Nurseries recommend four to six hours of sun daily. If you have too much shade, tomatoes won't thrive. Here's how to overcome this drawback.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Get a wagon or something you can roll around. The little red wagon that kids play with is ideal.

  2. Step 2

Select very sturdy, good-sized tomato plants from the local nursery. You don't have the luxury of raising baby plants with the limited sun available to you.

  3. Step 3

Get some really big pots. Tomatoes need lots of root space. I recommend the plastic or lightweight decorative pots, not the heavy clay or stoneware pots.

  4. Step 4

Place the pot(s) on the wagon. Remove the tomato plant from its original container. Loosen the roots slightly and put it in the new, larger pot. Fill the pot with dirt. You want the tomato plants down as deeply as possible in the pots. Leave a small amount of stem and top showing. New roots will grow along the stem that's covered with dirt, making the plant stronger.

  5. Step 5

Several times a day, pull the wagon with the tomato plants to the sunniest area of the yard. As the sun moves throughout the day, move the wagon to follow the sun. This can be a good project for children, if the wagon isn't too heavy for them to pull.

  6. Step 6

Don't worry if you miss shifting the tomatoes one day now and then. Don't neglect them though, as they'll need regular watering and fertilizing and visits with the sun to bear tomatoes.

on 7/22/2009 That is so neat. It not only makes a really cute container garden holder, but it's ease of moving them around to find sun is wonderful! A definite 5*
