Aromatherapy is not only relaxing, but it also has therapeutic uses. Derived from plant oils, essential oils are a main ingredient used in aromatherapy, which are combined with a carrier oil to create a custom aromatic scent. Many uses for aromatherapy exist from adding them to salt and sugar scrubs to massaging them into pulse points on the body. Aromatherapy has been used for centuries to bring healing to the body and spirit, and with hundreds of essential oils, you can create your own oil for personal use and luxurious beauty treatments.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Aromatherapy oil
  • Carrier oil
  • Essential oil
  • Coarse sea salt or sugar
  1. Step 1

Create your own custom aromatherapy oil or purchase a favorite scent from a retail store like Sephora or Bath and Body Works. To create your own, mix four drops of essential oil with a carrier oil like sweet almond oil. Most carrier oils have a nutty aroma, so they blend well with essential oils like lavender, tea tree, bergamot, vanilla or rosemary. There are also unscented carrier oils, so any essential oil may be mixed with them.

  2. Step 2

Use your choice of aromatherapy oil in a bath. Add six to10 drops of the aromatherapy oil to the bath water and soak, relaxing and softening the skin at the same time.

  3. Step 3

Add four to five drops of the aromatherapy oil to a cup of sea salt for an invigorating body scrub. You can also add aromatherapy oil to sugar in order to make a softer, sweeter scrub.

  4. Step 4

Use a dime-sized amount of aromatherapy oil to massage aching feet or legs. You may also have a partner use the aromatherapy oil for a relaxing full body massage.

  5. Step 5

Give yourself a therapeutic facial by adding five or six drops of aromatherapy oil to a facial steamer. Hold your face over the steamer, opening and cleansing pores while breathing in the subtle aroma of the oil.
