How to Choose a Rug Pad
When laying carpeting in your home or office, you want the carpet to stay in place, not wrinkle and, especially, last for many years. If you don't use the proper pad, however, you may end up with unnecessary wear on the carpet that could have been avoided. The pad not only protects the carpet, but also adds cushion to it. Here are options on choosing a rub pad that will keep your carpet in good condition for years. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose the padding for non-slip performance. If you are putting the carpet on a wood floor, you may need something that prevents the pad from moving. The non-skid padding works the best.
-
2
Choose the padding for cushion. Premium pads are thick and can add more cushion to the carpeted area. When you walk on a plush carpet with thicker padding, it is light walking on a cloud.

3
Choose the padding for the location it will be used. If you need outdoor padding, you want a waffle pad. This pad is very thin and, if used indoors where there is heavy foot traffic, deteriorates and turns to dust quickly.

4
Choose an all-surface padding, which will prevent wrinkles in the carpet and give a little cushion underneath. This type of padding does not give enough cushion, but does hold up under heavy traffic.

5
Choose the padding by price. Pad prices vary; outdoor padding could cost $9 a yard and a thick, cushioning pad might cost $14 a yard. Consider your carpeting situation and budget, and purchase the pad that will help keep your carpet in good condition longer.

Tips & Warnings
Buying $20-a-yard padding that cushions and lasts for 20 to 30 years is unrealistic, since the carpet will not last that long.
