Step 1
Establish a routine. Babies thrive on routines. They like to know what to expect. So start your routine with a bath or a song or whatever your baby responds well to.
-
Step 2
Learn to read your baby’s sleep signs. Eye rubbing, yawning, increased crankiness can be a sign your baby is ready for bed. Noticing these signs in your child and acting on them will help your baby get to sleep before he or she becomes overtired and harder to put down.
-
Step 3
Take away distractions. The first few months most babies can sleep in just about any situation. As they become more aware and start getting closer to the milestones of rolling over, crawling, talking and walking they become increasingly easy to distract. So when starting your sleep routine turn off the TV, the lights, the computer etc and get down to business.

Step 4
Make sure the temperature is right. Dressing your baby warmly regardless of the temperature can be very unsafe. Not enough clothes can also be uncomfortable. Dress your baby for bed as you would dress for bed. Take into consideration the amount of blankets you sleep under if you don’t put blankets on your baby.

Step 5
Make sure you baby is fed and has a clean diaper before going to sleep.
