Things You'll Need:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 Tbsp. salt
- 2 packages active dry yeast
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 egg
- 4 1/2 to 5 cups all purpose flour
- 2 8X4 inch loaf pans
- electric mixer or stand mixer
- Small saucepan
- 1 large bowl
- Cooking thermometer
-
Step 1
Take the first cup of water and pour into the saucepan. Add the oats, butter, honey, and the salt to the saucepan. Place on the stove and heat over medium heat. Stir constantly until the butter is melted and all the ingredients are well mixed together.
-
Step 2
Take the saucepan off the stove and let cool until a cooking thermometer reads between 115 to 125 degrees.
-
Step 3
In the large bowl, add the remaining cup of hot water (should be between 110 to 120 degrees). Pour the yeast into the hot water and stir. Let the yeast dissolve until it is foamy on top of the water.
-
Step 4
Now stir in the egg, cooled oat mixture, and 4 cups of the flour. With the electric mixer, beat the batter until it is smooth. Add the remaining 1/2 cup to 1 cup of flour to make a stiffer dough. Will still have a thick batter consistency.
-
Step 5
Pour the batter into the 2 loaf pans, dividing equally between both pans. Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place until the bulk of the dough looks almost doubled - will usually take about 30 to 45 minutes.
-
Step 6
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Bake the loaves for 35 to 40 minutes. Place the loaves on wire racks to cool. Serve and enjoy!
