Walking socks and walking shoes are both important when you walk or hike a lot. For this reason, you should always invest in the best socks for the job. Otherwise, the walk may not turn out to be very pleasant. Many people prefer cotton socks, but believe it or not this isn't the best choice. It's better to choose acrylic and synthetic blends.

If you walk outdoors then weather is a concern. Let's first consider warm weather and what type of sock is best for walking when it's hot. Comfort is always at the forefront, so choose a single layer light weight sock such as Coolmax, Wigwam and EMS that provide adequate ventilation. You may also want to consider a liner sock to keep sweat at bay as well as provide extra comfort and protection.

      Cold weather

Come winter time walking outside becomes more difficult, not only because of the cold, but also due to terrain changes. This makes walking a challenge, however, if you have proper shoes and socks you're set to go. For cold climates choose a double layer mid-weight to heavy sock that has extra padding in the heel, toes and ball of foot.

Some good choices are Thorlos, Wrightsock and Smartwool these socks are considered specialty socks. They're all well made and are good for long walks and semi-rough terrain. You do not need a liner sock for them they're good to go.

It's also very important for walking socks to fit properly. They should not be bunching or slipping, but fit snugly on the foot. This helps reduce chance of friction. It's the friction and dampness that creates a prime environment for blisters.

Additionally, most walking socks can be used for hiking as long as it's not really rough terrain then you may need to switch to a mountaineer sock. Whether you choose walking or mountaineer socks a short walk should be taken before you do a long walk or hike to check for comfort and proper fit.
