If you have a hammock, you know how relaxing it can be to spend the day laying in it reading or just enjoying the weather. In fact you may find that the hammock becomes everyone's favorite outdoor seat. Hammocks are great investments that will last through many years of use with the proper care and storage. Once the lazy days of Summer and Fall are over, you need to properly store your hammock to prevent damage. Here is how to store a hammock.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cool Dry Storage Location
  • Hammock
  • Hammock Bag
  • Old Bed Sheets
  • String
  1. Step 1

Clean your hammock before placing it into storage. This is to prevent mold and mildew from growing. You will also have a fresh clean hammock next season when you pull the hammock out of storage. For tips on how to clean a hammock, see the link at the bottom of this article.

  2. Step 2

If your hammock has spreader bars (two metal or wooden bars at either end of the hammock) you will need to roll it for storage. To do this, take the hammock down and starting at one end, start rolling it tightly like a jelly roll. Tie a piece of rope or string around the hammock roll to secure it. You may also want to buy a hammock bag to place it in.

  3. Step 3

If your hammock does not have spreader bars (i.e. it's only made of rope), then leave one end of it attached to the tree or stand. Take the loose end and begin twisting it clockwise until the entire hammock is twisted tightly. Fold the hammock in half and remove the other end from the tree or stand. Place in a hammock bag for storage.

  4. Step 4

You can also just fold a hammock in half and hang it in a cool dry location. An old bed sheet wrapped around the hammock works well to protect it from dirt and dust.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not store hammocks in a plastic garbage bag. Since Plastic does not allow air circulation, it will cause mold and mildew to grow.
