Things You'll Need:
- Guts
- Courage
- Vulnerability
-
Step 1
SAY HELLO TO YOUR NEIGHBORS. Many people do not even know what the name of their neighbors are, yet they see and pass by them every day. Introducing yourself to your neighbors will go a long way in getting yourself established in a new city. Although you may not become best chums, you will at least build up a relationship that is dependable. Perhaps you need someone to watch your cat while you're away? Neighbors can help each other out and look out for one another, which is crucial when you are in a new environment.
-
Step 2
JOIN A SOCIAL GROUP OR CLUB. There are groups out there for practically every hobby, so if you have one, search for a group in your area. If you don't, now is the time to consider taking one up, even if its just to meet new people. Coming together with a common interest is a great way to break the ice with new friendships. Check your local library for group and club information or search on the internet.
-
Step 3
JOIN A CHURCH. Churches are social hubs, and you will not walk away from one without saying hi to at least one person. Since their focus is relationships, it is generally easy to meet people through small group programs and Sunday school classes. Try and see if there is a group or a class tailored to your age group. Research the demographics before joining to help determine if its a right fit for you.

on 7/9/2009 When I moved to a new city, I thought I'd make friends through church. I tried more churches than I can count and eventually made some friends, but unfortunately at many congregations no one will talk to a visitor. But steps 1 and 2 are right on. I especially like step 1. People need to get to know their neighbors more. Thanks!
