play DVDs in Acer laptops

It may seem obvious, but to many it is not. To many new notebook computer owners, it is not as easy as it looks to play DVDs in their new Acer laptops. In my line of work, I get this question frequently. So here are a few quick, simple steps to get you on your way to be able to play DVDs in Acer laptops.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Acer notebook computer
  • DVD
  1. Step 1

Check to see if your Acer laptop has the capability to play DVDs. It will be branded with the familiar white DVD logo on the outside of the drive. This is located directly side of the laptop and has a button on the DVD drive. If it is not adorned with the DVD logo, you will be limited to only playing CDs.

  2. Step 2

Push the button on your Acer once you have located the DVD drive with the logo. This creates a springing motion to eject the DVD drive.

  3. Step 3

Place any DVD face up in the tray and gently push it back into your Acer laptop and then wait for it to start automatically or for a menu to appear.

  4. Step 4

If the DVD in your Acer laptop will not start automatically, (or when you see the menu of choices) you will need to set it up to play automatically. In Microsoft Windows, click start, control panel, hardware and sound and then select autoplay.

  5. Step 5

If you have Windows Vista Home Basic Edition, Windows Media and Real Player may not play the DVDs correctly. You may want to download a free media player from download.com. You will then have to manually play the DVDs each time.

  6. Step 6

Choose the action you wish Windows to perform each time you play a DVD on the acer laptop(from the dropdown menu). You will have at least two media players to choose from, or you can simply choose "take no action" which is good if you are not using the media player choices in that menu.

  7. Step 7

Eject the DVD and reinsert it into your Acer laptop. All your DVDs should now play successfully with your chosen media player each time.

  8. Step 8

Locate the controls on the bottom of your screen. They are standard DVD controls as well as a counter should you need to adjust volume or pause the DVD. You can press F11 for full screen view if you no longer need controls and are ready to watch your DVD.
