Canned soups can be expensive, salty and have too many preservatives. An economical and convenient alternative to buying cans of processed tomato soup is to make it from tomato paste, fresh milk and spices. Try this on a cold winter day alongside a grilled cheese sandwich. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 can of tomato paste, 6 ounces
  • 1 1/2 cups of milk
  • Spices to taste
  • Dash of salt to taste

      Put the milk in a medium saucepan. Use more or less milk, depending on taste.

      Open the can of tomato paste and add it to the milk. To get the remainder of the paste out of the can, add a little of the milk to it and stir it around, then pour it back in the pot.

      Select the spices you would like to use and add ¼ to ½ teaspoon of each. The spices you eventually use depend on your own tastes, but try ground black pepper, garlic, celery seed or parsley. If you don't like any spices, you can just add a dash of salt.

      Heat the soup gently over a low flame, stirring it as it heats. Make sure the tomato paste breaks up and becomes incorporated into the milk. Once the soup is warm and well mixed, pour it into a bowl.
