Step 1
This is both step one and rule one:
If it seems too heavy, don’t try to lift it. -
Step 2
Keep your feet parallel and lift from the legs with the feet shoulder-width apart.
-
Step 3
Keep your back straight and avoid stooping.
-
Step 4
Grip the object carefully with both your fingers and palms.
-
Step 5
Tuck in your chin.
-
Step 6
Using your body weight, move up from your hips keeping your shoulders straight.
-
Step 7
Raise yourself up with your legs.
-
Step 8
Keep your elbows close to your torso.
-
Step 9
Carry any weighty item close to your body and don’t twist, bend or slump. Turn corners with your whole body kept straight. Many injuries are caused when torquing the body to turn.
-
Step 10
Carefully watch where you step.
-
Step 11
Lay your load down by reversing the order: bend at the knees, keeping the back straight.
-
Step 12
Since back injuries are one of the most common injuries, remember to take a little time and review how to care for your back whenever you find you need to lift objects safely. The steps for proper lifting may not be all that new or challenging, but remembering to USE them is paramount! Make the extra effort. You won't notice any difference if you lift objects safely. But you'll sure notice it if you don't!
