Changing the fuel filter in your car can improve the gas mileage and help prolong the life of the car. It filters out impurities in the gas so they don't get to the main parts causing damage. Replacing this little filter at the right intervals, saves you a lot of money later on.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • new fuel filter
  • wrench
  1. Step 1

To start the process of changing your fuel filter, make sure you buy the right one for your vehicle. Going to a local auto parts store and getting them to help can insure proper fitting.

  2. Step 2

Now that you have your filter, place your vehicle on a level spot. Raise the hood and remove the negative post off the battery. This is only to insure there isn't a current flowing at all in the car.

  3. Step 3

Before beginning, remove the gas cap on your car, this helps to release pressure off the gas line.

  4. Step 4

Next, lay down at the side of your car near the back (on the side you fill your tank with). Look up under your car and follow the lines from the gas tank until you find your filter.

  5. Step 5

Using a wrench or screw driver, remove the metal band holding your filter in place. If there isn't one, please proceed to the next step.

  6. Step 6

Now that the band is removed or one side is, locate the ends to see if it has clips holding it on to the line or if you need the wrench to unscrew the lines from the filter. Either way, remove the filter from the line on each side. REMEMBER which way the filter was on. Do not lay up under this as you change it, a small amount of gas will leak from the filter, this is normal.

  7. Step 7

Replace the old filter with a new one. Replace the band back across the filter to hold it.

  8. Step 8

Replace the gas cap back on, the negative post on the battery, and Tada, your done!

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a cloth nearby to help clean up any spills
  • Make sure there are no open flames as you change this
  • Make sure to wash up and change clothes before lighting a cigarette as well
