Write Greeting Cards

Greeting cards have become a billion dollar industry and you can get your slice of the pie with a little effort and some fresh ideas.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Writing greeting cards can provide decent part-time income, and could become a full-time job. Generally there are four categories of greeting cards, Traditional, Contemporary, and Alternative. Traditional cards usually contain poetry, Contemporary (studio) are usually humorous or one liners, and Alternative is a combination of the others but focuses on things such as job loss, drinking, and single parenting.

  2. Step 2

Originality is the most sought after trait in the greeting card industry. Forget ideas that sound oddly familiar to you and get inspired by paying attention to your surroundings. In addition to originality, humor is by far the most popular characteristic of a greeting card, keeping it fresh is key.

  3. Step 3

Keep your audience in mind when writing, most of the market for greeting cards is women ages eighteen to late fifties. Keep in mind that although the card may not necessarily be for them, they are the market. In general a short but catchy message will be looked at than a long winded introduction due to the browsing nature of selecting a greeting card.

  4. Step 4

To submit your card(s) you will need the contact information of the company to which you will be sending your work. Look on their website or contact them via the mail requesting submission guidelines. With each submission include a brief cover letter containing your contact information and any comments you would like to share about the cards.

Tips & Warnings
  • Birthday cards are a great way to start because they are always in demand and easy to get into. Useful for seeing what companies are looking for.
  • Don't worry about artwork, but have an idea in mind. If you would like to include artwork for a card be sure to request art guidelines from the company as well.
  • Resubmit rejected ideas to other companies
  • Keep all of your work organized and save copies
  • Carry a notebook jot down ideas you think of during the day
