Step 1
Browse Online First! Before going to your local beauty supply store browse online to get an idea of the type of wig that you would like. There are several options to choose from. You can get Lace Front Wigs (Synthetic or Human Hair), Full Wigs (Synthetic or Human Hair), and Half Wigs (Synthetic or Human Hair). You should make your decision based on the look that you are going for. If you want a more realistic look opt for the half wig. That allows you the option of leaving some of your own hair out in the front and then blending it in with the added hair. You have the lace front which is great for creating new hair lines or providing more security with the adhesives and tapes. Then you have the full wig which covers the entire head and helps with a more uniform look. The opportunities are endless. By browsing online and taking a look at the pros and cons of each type of wig you will be prepared when you go the beauty supply store.

Step 2
Next make your trip to the BSS. You will want to take with you a wig cap and a hair comb. The wig cap can actually be purchased at the BSS and sometimes is given free when you purchase a wig. Also be sure to wear your hair in a loose style. Preferably wrapped or hanging where it can easily be pulled under a wig cap. Do not be afraid to ask for help. My first time buying a wig was a true experience I didn't know how I was supposed to put it on or secure. Ask the associate working for assistance. Once inside take a look at all of the wig options available or if you have made your decision of what you are looking for prior to going ask the associate to point you in that direction.

Step 3
Browse through the available options and once you have decided on a few ask the associate to get for you to try on. Many beauty supply stores have an area for you to try on the wig. You will usually find a mirror, a seat, and a place for you to put the wig stand. Ask for a wig cap before putting anything on your head. Try on as many wigs as it takes until you find the look that you are going for. Since you have your comb with you experiment with combing the wig into a look that suits you. Ask the associate their opinion on the wig and for any pros and cons (such as shedding, etc). Once you have made your decision you are ready to purchase. At the counter you can ask for wig shine to spray on to the hair to keep it shiny.

Step 4
Once you have left the Beauty Supply Store take your wig home and put it on. You may have to do some altering to the wig such as trim the bangs if your wig has one because they tend to be long and tweak it so that it looks good to you. Finally you have to OWN your wig and wear it with confidence. Don't try to pass the wig off as your hair instead think of it as an accessory that can change with any outfit. If you are a little self- conscious about wearing the wig spend some time wearing it at home first until you become comfortable prior to wearing it out. Also be sure to ask your sales associate at the BSS for any tips on caring for the wig (most come with care instructions). Once you become comfortable with purchasing wigs you can then venture out and purchase from online vendors, most of the wigs that are found online can be found in you BSS so look online first, pick out the wig, and then go to your BSS to try on prior to purchasing online. Most of all enjoy the many new looks that you can achieve and be ready to become an addict because once you purchase that first wig you will not be able to stop!
