Things You'll Need:
- Your choice of Fabric
- Sharp Scissors
- Clips to hold the fabric together (optional)
-
Step 1
Pick Your Fabric:
Picking your fabric is very important! You want a fabric that isn't going to unravel. Polar fleece (also known as micro fleece) is a great fabric to use. It has a lot of stretch in one direction and very little stretch in the other direction. It is machine washable and can be line dried or put in the dryer.
Now you need to decide whether you want the same design on both sides of the blanket OR do you want a solid color on one side and a design (such as stripes or polka dots) on the other side?
Now, what size blanket do you want to make? I bought fabric about 36" x 54" but the finished product was much smaller. Keep in mind you'll need to trim the edges and cut slits about 3 to 4 inches in on all 4 sides. A regular sized blanket (finished product) measures 30" x 40" and a larger crib size blanket measures 52" x 27.5".
For my blanket, I used a car seat size pink fleece with the same design on both sides. -
Step 2
Next you'll need to place one piece of fabric face down and one face up. Line them up and trim the edges so that both pieces are even. Make sure when cutting the fabric you use sharp scissors and make long cuts so it doesn't look choppy. Once the fabric is even on both sides, place clips (or tape) on the sides to keep the fabric from moving around a lot.
-
Step 3
Cut 3" x 3" squares out of each cornerCutting Corners:
Next you need to cut out the corners before you start cutting the slits. In each corner measure out a 3" x 3" box. You can use a pencil or chalk to mark where you need to cut if its easier for you. If you are making a larger blanket, you may want to cut a box measuring 4" x 4". -
Step 4
Continue to cut slits using your markerCutting the Slits:
Each slit needs to be about 1 inch wide and 3 inches long. If you feel confident enough eyeball each slit about an inch apart, you may begin cutting. I recommend using a piece of paper 1 inch wide and 3 inches long. This is your marker! Just lay down the marker and cut next to it. -
Step 5
Tying the Knots:
Last you need to tie the knots. This is the easiest part! If you have children they can help too. Just make sure the pieces that were cut together get tied together. Double knot each one making sure not to tie them to tight. If it is to tight the ends will look stretched and the blanket may look bunched.
Note: The blanket will naturally bunch up some. You may need to pull it each direction so it goes back into shape. -
Step 6
Continue cutting and tying until all sides are finished. And that's it!! These blankets are easy to do and make great gifts!
