How to Make a Cheap Area Rug

Finding an area rug with the correct design and color scheme to suit your room can be difficult or even impossible. Then there's the unfortunate situation when that perfect area rug is too expensive for your budget. A simple sisal rug is less expensive than most area rugs and can be customized to perfectly suit the decorating scheme of any room using basic paint and stencils.

Things You'll Need

  • Sisal Rug
  • Paper
  • Stencil Sheet
  • Marker
  • X-acto Knife
  • Stencil Brush
  • Paint
  • Small Paint Brush

Create a stencil or buy one to suit your needs. When creating a stencil, draw it out first on paper. Then trace the design onto a plastic stencil sheet with a marker. Cut the stencil out using a X-acto knife.

Position the stencil on the area rug and hold it down firmly with one hand.

Using your free hand, apply paint to the stencil using a stencil brush. A stencil brush has firm bristles and should be used in an up and down dabbing motion to avoid getting paint underneath the stencil.

Remove the stencil to see the finished pattern. Repeat the stencil on the rug as many times as necessary to create the desired pattern.

Allow the paint to dry and then use a small paint brush to apply more detail to the rug.

Tips & Warnings

  • Paint may bleed slightly when it is applied to a sisal rug, so intricate stencils should be avoided. Any detail work should be painted on by hand in the final step
