How to Read NTFS Partitions

NTFS is the standard format for hard drives connected to personal computers, but drives with that type of file system can also be read on Macs. If you are having trouble getting your computer to read an NTFS partition, you can use system utilities to mount the drive on your computer and browse its contents.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC or Mac computer
  • USB or data cable

    PC Instructions

  1. Step 1

    Connect the hard drive with the NTFS partition on it to your computer using a USB cable or other data cable.

  2. Step 2

    Log on to your computer with an account that has administrative privileges.

  3. Step 3

    Open the Start menu and click the "Control Panel" icon.

  4. Step 4

    Open the "Administrative Tools" folder and double-click the "Computer Management" icon.

  5. Step 5

    Go to the "Disk Management" tool on the left side of the window and then highlight the NTFS partition that you want to read.

  6. Step 6

    Right-click the name of the NTFS partition and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths."

  7. Step 7

    Select an unused drive letter to assign to the NTFS partition and click "OK." The partition will now appear in your "My Computer" window and will be readable.

  8. Mac Instructions

  9. Step 1

    Connect the hard drive with the NTFS partition on it to your computer using a USB cable or other data cable.

  10. Step 2

    Open a new Finder window by clicking the icon in the Dock.

  11. Step 3

    Navigate to the "Utilities" folder, which is in the "Applications" section of the Mac hard drive.

  12. Step 4

    Double-click the "Disk Utility" icon.

  13. Step 5

    Highlight the NTFS partition that you want to read and click the "Mount" button at the top of the window. The partition will now appear in the Finder and will be readable.
