How to Recover a DBX File

Microsoft Outlook Express was an email client that was included with the Internet Explorer program through version 6.0. Microsoft replaced Outlook Express in Windows Vista, however, Outlook Express is still used by a number of users worldwide. Outlook Express is popular because it is free and offers many of the same features that Microsoft's Outlook email program provides. A common problem for Outlook Express users is that the .dbx database format which stores Outlook Express email can become corrupted and requires recovery.

Things You'll Need:

  • Outlook Express Recovery Tool

    Recovering Files

  1. Step 1

    Download and install the Microsoft Outlook Express Recovery Tool listed in the resources of this article.

  2. Step 2

    Open the Outlook Express Recovery tool and select the "Add Button" from the program's main menu.

  3. Step 3

    Choose the .dbx file to recovery and select the "Open" menu option. The program will default to the default location that Outlook Express saves .dbx files on your computer but you can change the location if you have selected a different folder to save .dbx files from your email program.

  4. Step 4

    Select the folder on your computer to save the recovered .dbx files to using the recovery tool's file chooser and select the "OK" button.

  5. Step 5

    Choose the output format of the recover file. You should choose ".dbx" format for this choice. Then, single click the "recover" button and the file recovery will commence. After file recovery is complete exit the Outlook Recovery tool and your .dbx file will be recovered.
