In Microsoft Windows, Dynamic Link Library files are important system files that multiple programs and system processes may rely on to function properly. The Microsoft C Runtime Library and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 both rely on a Dynamic Link Library (or .dll) file called msvcr80.dll. If this file becomes corrupted or is deleted, both of these programs may encounter problems and become unstable. This .dll file can, however, be downloaded for free online and installed in the Windows system directory.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open your Web browser and navigate to a download location for a working version of msvcr80.dll. You can find a link to this location in the Resources section below.

  2. Step 2

Click the download link and save the file to your computer. When the download finishes, open the file from your browser's download manager or by navigating to it and double-clicking it. The file will open in Winzip; click the "Extract" button, choose your desktop as the destination directory for the unzipped file and click "Open." Msvcr80.dll will appear on your desktop.

  3. Step 3

Double-click the "My Computer" icon and navigate to the Windows system folder. The location of this folder depends on which version of Windows you're using. If you're using Windows XP or Vista in a 32-bit system, navigate to "C:\Windows\System32." If you're using either of these systems in a 64-bit system, navigate to "C:\Windows\SysWOW64." If you're using Windows 2000 or NT, navigate to "C:\WINNT\System32." If you're using Windows 95, 98 or ME, navigate to "C:\Windows\System."

  4. Step 4

Drag the msvcr80.dll you extracted to the desktop into the system folder. If you're asked whether or not you want to replace an existing file of the same name, click "Yes."

  5. Step 5

    Reboot Windows.
