How to Set Up Remote Access Through the Internet

Remote access through the Internet allows you to work on one computer from another, as long as both computers are connected to the Internet and online. This gives you the power of using your own files and programs from anywhere, the same way you would as if sitting in front of that computer. There are several different means you can use to remote access your computer but they all work the same way.

Things You'll Need:

• VNC software
• Remote-access service

1. Use a program or sign up for remote-access service. You can buy or download a Virtual Network Connection (VNC) program (see Resources). Instead of installing your own program you can also sign up for an online service, which is usually more reliable and provides support.

2. Set up the local computer. If you have downloaded a program you will need to click on the program and install it. If you have signed up for a service, the administrators will provide you with a page where you can download a program enabling you to utilize the service. You will need to pick a password during this process.

3. Set up or use the remote computer. If you have downloaded a program you will have to install what is called a "viewer" part of the program on the computer you want to use to access your home computer. If you are using a service, any computer you use to remotely access your home computer will require you to download and install a small plugin.

• Install firewall software to help protect your home computer; remote access opens you up to more security vulnerabilities.
