Change Light Globes

Change light globes to replace dirty or broken glass, or to give light fixtures a new look. New globes can make home lighting fit the decor with matching colors and styles. A light always shines brighter through a new globe as well. Ceiling and wall lighting is sometimes damaged by broom handles or when moving furniture. The lights usually work after such accidents, but the globes are cracked.

    How to Change Light Globes

  1. Step 1

Shut off the breaker controlling the circuit your light is on, and turn the switch to the off position. Sometimes bulbs have to be removed to change globes, leaving light sockets exposed.

  2. Step 2

Remove the holding screw or screws that secure the old globe. The holding screw may be a metal or plastic covered cap screw in the center of the globe over a ceiling light. Unscrew this type by hand, while holding the globe to avoid dropping it. Use adjustable pliers to loosen a stuck holding screw. Some light globes are held on by three screws threaded through a metal rim on the light fixture. Many of these holding screws require a Phillips screwdriver for loosening. Support the globe with one hand while removing the screws. Pull the old globe away once all holding screws are removed.

  3. Step 3

Put on the new globe. Set the replacement globe in place on the light fixture and check the fit. If the globe is able to be tightened completely without contacting any of the bulbs it's a good fit. Replace the holding screw or screws and tighten securely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Reattach the old globe if a light bulb gets in the way of removing it. Take the light bulb out with the globe securely attached, then remove the globe
