A room divider or screen can be a handy way to divide a room into different areas, hide clutter, or provide a decorative accent. Creating a simple room divider is a relatively easy task which is suitable for beginners and requires few tools. Builders can add a personal touch to the room divider through the use of paint or easily make the divider larger by adding addition boards. Most home improvement stores will be happy to cut plywood sheets to the size required for this project.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sandpaper
  • Four 1"x 17"x 72" plywood boards
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Polycrylic Protective Finish
  • 8 Furniture glides
  • Hammer
  • 6 3/4" Hinges
  • Screws
  1. Step 1

Sand the plywood boards to remove any rough spots.

  2. Step 2

Paint all surfaces of the boards with the desired paint color. A wood stain can also be used depending on one's personal preference. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

  3. Step 3

Apply a clear polycrylic protective finish to the painted boards. This will give the divider a glossy and finished appearance as well as protect the paint from scratches and other minor damage. For best results, apply two coats of the finish and allow the boards to dry thoroughly after each application.

  4. Step 4

Hammer two furniture glides into the end of each board where it will set on the floor. This will make moving the finished divider easier and prevent damage to the floor.

  5. Step 5

Attach the hinges with screws to join the boards together. Hinges should be placed evenly two feet from the top and two feet from the bottom of each board.
