How to Remove a Fence Post

A sagging or rotted fence post can cause the whole fence to fall down. Removing a post is a quick and efficient way to keep the fence in good shape. Fence posts vary in size and shape, so when you are removing them take into account that it might be top heavy. The depth that the post has been put into the ground also varies, so be prepared to do a little digging if need be. Does this Spark an idea?

      For a wood fence, remove the nails from one of the fence panels that is connected to the post you are removing. This will detach the panel from the fence. Do the same for the panel on the other side of the post.

      Take one of the 2x4s and nail it to the end of the fence panel you just removed from the post. It does not need to be inserted into the ground as it is just holding the fence and is not permanent. This will keep the fence from pulling out on the other end. Do the same for the other fence panel.

      You will now have access to the post you are removing. Using your shovel, dig around the post until it is accessible at the bottom.

      Gently rock the post back and forth until it can be removed.

      If it is in cement, dig around the cement until you can remove the post and the cement it is set in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since the fence post is in the ground, there is a good chance the bottom is rotted. Use your shovel to lift it out of the hole.

  • Post can be heavy. You may need assistance when lifting it out.
