Have you ever wondered how to make your own sparklers? Sparklers are a pyrotechnic device held in your hand that does not explode. This recipe will walk you through how to make your own red or green sparklers using legal chemicals (see the Resources section to purchase). Make sure you check local laws where you live and verify that sparklers are legal before you make them.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 300 parts potassium chlorate = 1 cup
  • 60 parts aluminum fines, flitter, or granules = a little less than 4 tbsp.
  • 2 parts charcoal = tiny pinch
  • 500 parts strontium nitrate = 1 2/3 cup (to make red sparklers)
  • 60 parts barium nitrate = a little less than 4 tbsp. (to make green sparklers)
  • 10% Dextrin solution
  • Plastic coffee container or milk jug with top cut off
  • Metal wires cut 12 to 14 inches in length
  1. Step 1

Mix the dry ingredients with enough dextrin solution to make a moist slurry (consistency like mud). Include the strontium nitrate if you want a red sparkler or the barium nitrate if you want a green sparkler. Mix all of your dry ingredients in an old plastic coffee can or plastic milk jug with the top cut off.

  2. Step 2

Dip your wire in the mixture. You can use wire hangers and cut them in lengths of 12 to 14 inches. You will need to leave enough space at one end (about 4 inches) of the wire free of chemicals so you can easily hold the device when lit.

  3. Step 3

Have a flower pot filled with dirt ready. An easy method for drying after dipping your wire is to stick the wire in a pot of dirt for a few hours to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store your sparklers in a safe place out of high heat and high humidity
