Creating a new hairstyle can be fun or utterly frustrating depending on how realistic you are willing to be while making decisions. Not every hairstyle is suitable for everyone. Much depends upon things like type and texture of hair, as well as hair length. Your personality, attitude and lifestyle limitations also need to be considered. Once you come to some conclusions about that, you can start looking for a new hairstyle that meets your criteria.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Study current hair trends in fashion and hair magazines as well as online. Print, copy or tear out pictures of hairstyles that interest you. Check out celebrity hairstyles and print or cut out any you like.

  2. Step 2

Decide if the new style you want includes a change in hair color as well. If so, try to find sample pictures of the color choices you like the best.

  3. Step 3

Identify what your priorities are for a new hairstyle. They might include a cut that emphasizes certain facial features or hides them with bangs; a wash and wear "do" that requires little maintenance; a layered cut or one that is all one length; or a style that is long enough to be worn up or down.

  4. Step 4

Determine if you want your own variation of an existing hairstyle or something brand new.

  5. Step 5

Access makeover sites on the Internet like those listed in the resources below. Create an online model to try out new hairstyle and color options.

  6. Step 6

Set up a consultation with a stylist. Take the pictures you have collected and a list of your decisions about what you want to achieve. Discuss styles that best fit your facial shape, hair type and texture, length of hair and lifestyle limitations. Try to narrow your choices down to the top three to five options the stylist believes can work for you.

  7. Step 7

Settle on a hairstyle. Be sure you are comfortable with your decision, particularly if the look is drastically different from anything you have worn before or if it requires major cutting or a color change.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a hairstyle that you can maintain. Be realistic in choosing possible hairstyles. Listen to the hairstylist's advice about cut and color. You are paying for that expertise. Use good hair care products to maintain your new style properly. Choose those best suited for your type and texture of hair. Use the right styling implements. Use hairpieces, wigs and extensions to give you even more styling options. In today's world, there is so much that can be done with synthetic hair that there is no need to limit your options.
  • Don't attempt to create the cut, style or color on your own. Get professional assistance to make sure your hair remains healthy.
