How Can I Make My Dog Bark?

Most people want silent dogs. Other people want a dog that can bark on command or even let them know when company is at the door. Training a silent dog to bark can be difficult, but when given the right amount of time and effort, you could have your dog barking on command in no time.

    Things You'll Need

    • Dog toy or treat
      • 1

Grab a toy that your dog enjoys playing with. A toy that he barks at while he's playing would be preferred. Otherwise, just choose a toy that your dog gets excited about. If your dog doesn't have a lot of toys, try using a treat.

      • 2

Hold the toy or treat above your dog so that it is in plain sight, but not within reach.

      • 3

Tell him to bark. If he barks, praise him and give him the treat or the toy. If your dog does not bark, try making a barking sound at him until he does.

Continue practicing this until your dog barks on command each time. Continue practicing with him on a daily basis until he understands and responds to the command.

I have a question. My dog barks quite a bit when we are in the car and he realizes that we are getting close to home. How can I make him bark in the house when he hears someone at the door. He perks up his ears when he hears someone, but it otherwise silent. He also barks when we are getting close to the kennel that I take him to while I am working.
