How to Replace a Windshield Wiper Motor

The windshield wipers on your vehicle serve an important purpose. As a safety feature, they increase visibility during inclement weather by wiping away dirt, mud, water and other debris. The wiper blade is controlled by a windshield wiper motor. This motor moves the wiper blade across the windshield. Although it is not common, windshield wiper motors do burn out. When this happens, you'll need to know how to replace yours.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Socket wrench and socket set
• Phillips-head screwdriver
• Flat-tip screwdriver

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Loosen the nut on the cable clamp until the clamp is loose enough to pull off the negative terminal.

2. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield.

3. Remove the retaining nut holding the wiper arm and blade assembly to the wiper motor.

4. Pull the entire wiper blade and arm off the wiper motor. Remove the underlying gaskets.

5. Remove the front plastic trim/cowl at the base of the windshield to expose the wiper motor. You'll need to either pry it off using a flat-tip screwdriver or remove the screws on the trim. How you do this will vary according to your vehicle.

6. Remove the bolts holding the wiper motor in place.

7. Unplug the electrical wires going to the wiper motor and pull out the motor.

8. Install the new wiper motor by reversing the steps you just completed.
