Want to put all that water running out your downspout to good use? You can save monay at the same time as keeping plants healthy and watered.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 35-55 gallon barrel
  • Side cutting drill bit or Cutoff tool
  • Drill
  • 3/4 inch drill bit
  • 3/4 inch outdoor faucet with male threads
  1. Step 1

Use either a cutoff tool or a side cutting drill bit to cut square hole in the top of the barrel. Make the hole about 5x3 (enough to get the gutter tube through with a little extra room) in the top as close to the edge as possible.

  2. Step 2

Now drill a hole about 6 inches from the bottom, on the opposite side as the top hole. You want the top hole against the building and the hole where the front of the barrel will be. The hole will be for the faucet to be mounted.

  3. Step 3

Now screw the faucet into the hole. It may take a bit of force while turning to get it in. It is suppose to be tight to ensure a water tight seal. The metal threads will make threads in the plastic barrel. You can use some type of flexible thread compound if you choose or need to. "Black RTV sealant" works well. Find it at any automotive store.

  4. Step 4

Place the barrel at the bottom of any downspout and modify the downspout to go a few inches into the top hole you made. After a rainfall connect a hose or use a bucket to get the water where you need it. Use it generously, its free water and is actually better for your plants than city water (usually).

Tips & Warnings
  • A hole may be drilled near the top on the side for an overflow, or the water can just spill through the top hole when full.
  • A downspout leaf guard is helpful, or clean the barrel when needed.
  • Wear safety glasses when working with tools.
