The "rate of difficulty" of this particular endeavor, "earning a living via Affiliate Advertising" is moderately challenging. It can be done, and many savvy internet people are doing just that but it takes time. Successful Affiliate Marketing also takes an understanding of how to market your blogs, websites, articles, and your overall interaction and Global Networking skills.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You must have a blog, website, and a few social networking pages set up. Once the aforementioned is started you must WORK THEM. What's meant by "work them" is you will need to do everything you can, without spamming, to get your blog and website propagated throughout the Internet. This is done by submitting your blog and website to as many search engines as possible. Keep track of how your site is doing by setting it up with Alexa.com or one of the other tracking websites. You can track and monitor how well your site is doing by the number of visits, where your visitors are coming from, how long they stay on your page, etc.

Alexa measures your websites popularity, and your rank is calculated using a combination of your average daily visitors and pageviews quarterly. Google has the highest combination of visits and pageviews and is ranked # 1. My website, on the other hand, is ranked 4,964,205. Don't laugh, because I have a 40% increase from 3 months ago. 6 months ago the site ranked in the 7,000,000 range.

  2. Step 2

Be very active in your blogging and social networking communities. This is a must! No need to spam, just be active. For example, comment as often as you can on other blogs in your blogging neighborhood. Every comment you make in turn leaves a "stamp", leaves a link back to your blog. Therefore, the more you comment, the more you put your blog out there. You can even leave comments on blogs that are in another language, if you can write or speak a little of that language.

As for the MySpaces, Facebooks, Twitters, etc., they provide excellent ways for you to promote your website or blog without actually appearing to do so. The unfortunate passing of Michael Jackson, for example (and yes I am a fan!), as crude as this may sound, provided an excellent way to network and you did not have to solicit to do so. I watched the memorial service on the Internet from CNN.com where you could use Facebook for live chat and I also logged on to MSNBC which utilized Twitter for live chat. My user name on both Twitter and Facebook is my website minus the dot com. So basically, every time I typed, "wow, that was one of my favorite MJ songs," or "I didn't know Jermaine could still sing" .. whatever I typed, my name was there for millions to see. And out of respect for the event, I did not solicit, not one time.

When there is a news worthy event, log on to MSNBC, CNN, Yahoo News, Comcast.net, and any other popular online media outlet and chat about it. You will create a marketing bonanza for your website, which brings us to the next step.

  3. Step 3

You must have a quality website with information that people can use. For lack of a better way to put this, if your website is loaded with garbage, or you're just trying to sell this, that, or the other, and most of what you have on your page is not related, people will quickly leave and never return. Your site must be "user-friendly" and easy to navigate from point A to point B.

  4. Step 4

Join as many Affiliate Programs as you can but they must be with reputable companies. Also try to join the programs that fit with what your site is about and/or what you are blogging about. Use quality banners and strategic links to promote what you are selling. Do not inundate your site with too many ads. They must be carefully placed on the page so your site will not look to gimmicky.

  5. Step 5

Join your Affiliate Programs through company's like CJ.com, Linkshare, Google Advertising, Direct Network, and a few other reputable online advertising channels. As you join the different programs you can monitor your clicks, impressions, and sales to see what campaign works and what doesn't work. Keep your ads up to date and if you see a certain promotion is not selling, remove it from your blog/website and go with what is hot at any given time.
