Billions in Grants for Homeland Security and Emergency Response Are Available

The federal government is making billions of dollars in grant money available to local communities. The grants are intended to strengthen homeland security in local communities, and enable first responders to better prepare for emergency situations. Here's how to find out about grant availability in your community.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

**Explore FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program**

FEMA's grant program provides support to firefighters for training, fire prevention measures, and equipment and staffing. Different programs have different cycles for applying and funding.

Visit FireGrantSupport.com for full information (and note that it's a COM, not GOV website).

  2. Step 2

**Look Into Other FEMA Grant Programs**

FEMA also funds other grant and assistance programs related to security and emergency response, including Emergency Management Performance Grants, Port Security Grants, Intercity Bus Security Grants, and numerous others.

See Resources, below, for a direct link to the list of FEMA grant programs.

  3. Step 3

    **Visit GrantsNet**

GrantsNet is a comprehensive listing of grant programs at the Department of Health and Human Services. These include dozens of grant programs aimed at supporting research, community services, and training programs for responding to large-scale health emergencies.

Be sure to look at the Forecast of future grant programs, to prepare in advance to request federal money in the next funding cycles.

See Resources, below, for a direct link to the GrantsNet site at HHS.

  4. Step 4

    **Search the Responder Knowledge Base**

The Responder Knowledge Base is a large repository of information for first responders.

Visit rkb.us, and click on the tab for Grants. This will take you to a listing of more than 200 grant programs geared towards emergency response and homeland security.
